The McDuffie County Board of Education approved new principals at R.L. Norris Elementary School and J.A. Maxwell Elementary School during the April 24, 2025, meeting.
Jamie Maddox, who has served as assistant principal at Thomson Elementary School for six years, will lead the faculty and staff at the new Maxwell Elementary. The two schools will consolidate prior to the start of the 2025-2026 year in a state-of-the-art building serving pre-k through third grade. Maddox is honored and excited to take on the leadership role of the school.
“This is a unique opportunity to not only open a brand-new school but also to take two strong school families and unite them to best serve our students,” she said. “There's a deep sense of responsibility but even more so, I'm energized by the potential we have to create something special for our students, families, and staff. I'm truly looking forward to watching our students walk into this new building, filled with curiosity, joy, and being proud to call Maxwell Elementary their school.”
The board also approved a familiar face to take the helm at Norris Elementary, which serves fourth and fifth grade students. Sonya Thomas, assistant principal at Dearing Elementary for the past nine years, will now transition to lead the Norris faculty and staff.
“I am deeply honored to accept the role of principal at R.L. Norris Elementary and excited for the journey ahead,” Thomas said. “It is a privilege to serve this school in a community where I live... It will be a blessing to work alongside such dedicated educators, staff, students, and families. Together, we will continue fostering an environment where every student is empowered to learn, grow, and succeed. As a daughter of a Norris graduate, I look forward to building upon our school’s strong foundation and working collaboratively to shape an inspiring future. This is an incredible opportunity. I am eager to lead with love, compassion and purpose.”
Superintendent Dr. Mychele Rhodes spoke highly of both new principals at the April 24 meeting.
“I am delighted to recommend two of our veteran assistant principals into new leadership roles in our district,” said Dr. Rhodes. “Both of these educators are well-versed in research-based instructional practices and will lead our schools with energy, tenacity and commitment. I am excited for the opportunities which will be on the horizon for McDuffie County students.”
