The transportation department supports the McDuffie County School System by providing a safe and respectful environment for our students as they travel to and from school. Our bus drivers are dedicated to providing a safe and timely route for students each day.
The bus shop is located behind Thomson High School. This building is where the school buses are maintained and repaired, training takes place, and fuel is available. We have 4 bus mechanics available to repair any problems that may occur with the operation of school buses. We have our own certified bus driver trainer, Terry Lowe. He assists potential drivers in obtaining the skills needed to operate a school bus.
A great deal of responsibility comes with this department. Operating a 67-passenger school bus fleet demands knowledge, patience, and skill. That is why the McDuffie County School System and the State Board of Education require that all bus drivers, monitors, and substitute drivers participate in annual mandatory training activities. A CDL with a passenger and school bus endorsement is required for all bus drivers. This permit is accessible through the Department of Motor Vehicles.
